Fotógrafo y escritor estadounidense de origen francés. Hijo del pintor Lyonel Feininger, se graduó de la
Bauhaus en 1925. Después de estudiar arquitectura, se mudó a Suecia en 1933 y se estableció con una firma especializada en fotografía arquitectónica e industrial. Entre sus obras más conocidas figuran sus fotos en blanco y negro, llenas de detalles, de la ciudad de Nueva York. Estas fueron logradas por medio de técnicas y aparatos experimentales, de los que fue pionero a lo largo de su carrera. También tomó muchas fotografías de objetos naturales, como conchas, árboles y huesos. En 1939 se estableció en Nueva York, y entre 1943 y 1962 trabajó para la revista
Life. Además, escribió prolíficamente sobre la técnica de la fotografía.
